What is a recruitment video?

Definition and Key Success Factors for Effective Employee Recruitment.

The “War for Talent” is in full swing and will intensify in the coming years. This term, coined by McKinsey & Company, describes the competition among companies for skilled workers. Demographic change is contributing to this trend, as the baby boomers are retiring and the birth rate has fallen to 1.5 children since the 1960s. This has a particular impact on STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), where the number of graduates is declining. At the same time, global competition is drawing high-potential talent abroad, while the growing demand for highly qualified workers requires continuous professional development. Shifting values are placing greater emphasis on work-life balance.

Companies must adapt to these changes. One effective way to do this is through recruiting videos, which are used in employer branding and HR marketing. These videos offer applicants authentic insights into their future workplace, showcase job opportunities, and shape the employer brand’s image. They can be found on career pages, in job postings, and at recruitment fairs. A recruitment video is a specific type of promotional video designed specifically to convince potential applicants of an employer’s merits.

Unlike a traditional promotional video, whose main goal is often to convince customers of the merits of products or services, a recruitment video is designed to appeal to the target audience of job seekers by highlighting the company’s culture. These videos are typically only a few minutes long and communicate the relevant information clearly and simply. A recruitment video allows potential applicants and professionals to gain an in-depth understanding of the company and its employer brand, helping them determine whether the company is a good fit for them as an employer.

GFA stands out not only for its traditional corporate achievements—which are considered standard today—but also for its goal of “finding solutions to the injustices of this world” on a global scale. Those who work here firmly believe that they can make a difference!

Over three days of filming in the winter of 2023, we captured a wide range of international employee testimonials at GFA’s headquarters in Hamburg. The biggest challenge in producing this recruitment film was gaining the trust of the participants in a very short time in order to elicit authentic and lively testimonials, thereby giving potential candidates a glimpse into the company. After all, filmmaking isn’t just about mastering technical know-how, planning precisely, and thinking creatively—it’s also about having a good sense of how to interact with people.

We are proud of this promotional video —which also serves as a recruitment video—for the Asklepios Campus Hamburg. In 2023, we were commissioned by Dr. Thorsten E. Thiel, Managing Director of the Asklepios Medical School, to produce a promotional video for the campus of the Asklepios Clinics and Semmelweis University. The goal was to show medical students the benefits of studying at ACH—including a solid clinical education with maximum practical relevance on a campus with a close-knit atmosphere.

The biggest challenge was to develop a concept that would appeal to the young target audience—a film that conveys the philosophy and benefits of ACH in a very short amount of time and is so unique that it sticks in viewers’ minds. The result is an innovative idea that is unparalleled in the realm of corporate image films.

The film adopts the perspective of a student undergoing training at the ACH. It is consistently told from a POV (point of view) perspective. A camera helmet built specifically for this purpose allowed us to capture this perspective as realistically as possible. The result is an entertaining film with a special charm.

The formula for a successful recruitment video.

The criteria at a glance.

Thorough planning and consideration of several factors are crucial for a successful recruiting video. A high-quality recruitment video offers an effective way to engage potential candidates and strengthen the employer brand. Below are some key components to consider when creating a successful recruitment video:

Target Audience Focus

When creating a recruitment video, it is crucial to clearly define the target audience. The message may vary depending on the industry, age group, and position. The choice of social media platforms for publishing the video should also be tailored accordingly.

Communication on an Equal Footing

Communication in a recruitment video should be on an equal footing, both with current employees and with potential candidates. Including trainees or current employees in interviews lends the video authenticity and credibility.

Authenticity

A good recruitment video should always be authentic. It’s not a promotional video for products or services, but rather a way to offer potential applicants a genuine glimpse into the company culture. Overly staged or scripted interviews often come across as off-putting.

Simplicity

A recruitment video should focus on the essentials. It should showcase the day-to-day work, the workplace, the employees, and the most important information without getting sidetracked by unimportant details. Overly elaborate productions can be counterproductive.

Professionalism

Producing a recruitment video requires professional equipment and a trained team. The editing and post-production of the video are crucial to its quality.

A Compelling Introduction

A recruitment video should captivate viewers from the very beginning and appeal to them on an emotional level. A provocative, shocking, or humorous opening can grab the attention of potential employees, as long as it aligns with the employer brand.

Here's what our customers say.

Benefits of a recruitment video.

Targeted Strategies to Boost Candidate Interest – A Look at the Key Benefits.

A professional recruitment video offers companies significant advantages over traditional text ads. Not only does it convey a lot of information in a short amount of time, but it also appeals to applicants on an emotional level. This emotional connection can significantly increase interest in an open position and lead to more applications.

Recruiting videos allow companies to authentically convey benefits such as flexible work hours, flat hierarchies, a good work-life balance, and corporate values. This improves the quality of applicants, who are better able to assess whether the position and the company are a good fit for them.

Recruiting videos attract more attention on social media than text ads and are often used at job fairs to stand out from other companies and spark the interest of potential candidates. Boost candidate interest with an engaging recruiting video!

How is a recruitment video produced?

6 Steps to Creating Your Professional Recruitment Video.

Producing a compelling recruitment video requires careful planning and a structured approach. Here, you’ll learn how a recruitment video production typically unfolds and what steps will help ensure that your company is perceived as an attractive employer.

The entire process, from the initial commission to the completion of the film, takes about one to three months. Please note, however, that the speed of internal coordination processes can affect this timeframe.

A recruitment video requires specialized expertise, creative approaches, and effective collaboration. Rely on our many years of experience to create a video that appeals to the right talent and provides authentic insights into your company culture.

1. Concept Development and Goal Setting

The first step in creating a professional recruitment video is to define your goals and target audiences. What impression do you want applicants to have, what messages do you want to convey, and what values set your company apart as an employer? A clear project plan and a compelling storyline with authentic insights into everyday work life form the foundation for a successful video.

2. Casting and Employee Testimonials

Communication in a recruitment video should be on an equal footing, both with current employees and with potential candidates. Including trainees or current employees in interviews lends the video authenticity and credibility.

3. Shooting Schedule

Working closely with your company, we plan the specific details of the shoot. This includes selecting suitable filming locations, organizing an experienced film crew, and coordinating the technical equipment. A detailed shooting schedule ensures that everyone involved is fully informed and that the shoot runs smoothly.

4. Film shoot

Filming usually takes place at the actual workplaces and shows employees going about their daily work routines. These insights give job applicants a realistic picture and build trust in your employer brand. Filming typically takes 1–3 days, depending on the scope of the project and the number of scenes.

5. Post-production

Once filming is complete, post-production begins. Your video will be professionally edited, set to appropriate music and sound, and enhanced with animations as needed. Through several rounds of review, we ensure that the video effectively conveys your employer brand and key messages.

6. Publication

Your recruitment video is ready for release. We’ll handle posting it on platforms like LinkedIn and help you run targeted ads to reach the right audience. Whether on your careers page, on social media, or on specific job platforms—we’ll make sure your video has the desired impact and appeals to candidates.

Young job seekers today expect video content on career websites. They don’t just want to read—they want to see who’s hiring, what makes the company unique, how it operates, and what they can expect as potential employees. This can be achieved, for example, through a testimonial video. A good example is this video we created for our client Ferrostaal Trading GmbH ( Jebsen & Jessen Industrial Services since September 2021 ). We edited together the responses from various interviewees across different departments to create a kaleidoscope of perspectives.

We produced another film—one of a completely different nature—for the Hamburg-based shipping company Carsten Rehder. After we had produced a promotional film for this long-established shipping company in California, Florida, Taiwan, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Hamburg, and the Philippines, the company expressed a desire to edit the footage into a film that could be used for the shipping company’s recruitment efforts.

The video’s main focus was on highlighting why Carsten Rehder is a top-notch employer. To achieve this, we took the footage and combined it with an emotional and motivational narration and some engaging testimonials. The result is this film, which has been extremely successful in helping Carsten Rehder recruit more seafarers—particularly in Southeast Asia—for his ships.

How much does a recruitment video cost?

Insight into the cost structure of recruitment videos and customized solutions for your company.
The cost of producing a professional recruitment video can vary significantly depending on your specific requirements and the project. Below, we’d like to explain the various factors that influence the cost estimate for your recruitment video:

Pre-production

Pre-production encompasses all steps taken before the actual filming begins. This includes client support and consultation, the conceptual development of the film’s content and visuals, organizing the crew and equipment, casting, scouting suitable locations, obtaining filming permits, selecting props, and creating a storyboard. It also includes comprehensive preparation of the entire team, during which the project is discussed in detail.

Equipment

A high-quality film requires the appropriate technical equipment. In addition to a high-quality camera, this includes various light sources, tripods, camera accessories such as sliders or cranes, monitors, and transmission modules for the control room. In some cases, the use of a drone may also be necessary.

Acting and Voice-Over

The costs for actors and voice actors can vary widely and depend on various factors. These include whether they are affiliated with an agency (which involves placement fees), their level of fame, and how the company plans to use the film.

Production

Production encompasses the actual days of filming. The number of crew members required and the technical requirements depend on the scope of the film. The core team typically consists of the director, cinematographer, lighting crew, and sound crew. Larger productions require both technical and creative staff.

Post-production

During post-production, the footage is reviewed, edited, color-corrected, and processed in other ways to bring the planned concept to life. Animation and sound design can also play a role in this process.

Music Licensing

Music plays an important role in most recruitment videos. It can either be selected from a library of pre-recorded, cost-effective, GEMA-free tracks, or it can be more elaborate if custom music needs to be composed specifically for your video.

Correction Loop

The client usually has the opportunity to review the film and suggest changes. These changes may relate to aspects such as the film's length, the selection of scenes, and the music.

Additional Costs

Overhead costs include all expenses that are not directly related to the activities mentioned above but still incur costs. These include travel expenses, lodging costs, rental fees for filming locations, meals for crew and cast, expenses for props and costumes, administrative fees, and more.

It is important to understand that the cost of a recruitment video depends on many individual factors and therefore cannot be determined on a flat-rate basis. Every video project is a unique work of craftsmanship and art that consists of a variety of steps.

The total cost of producing a recruitment video can therefore vary between 3,000 euros and 20,000 euros, depending on the factors mentioned above.

Recruiting videos can also be designed in a completely different way, as demonstrated by this video from Fiverr. The Israeli company offers an online marketplace for services provided by freelancers. In the video, they poke fun at the typical portrayal of attractive work environments. At the same time, by the end of the video, they manage to generate genuine interest in the company by dropping the satire and seriously promoting themselves as an employer. It’s one of the few truly successful examples of a recruitment video that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Of course, this requires courageous customers—customers who are able to laugh at themselves.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any ideas for your recruitment video. We’re happy to work in traditional formats, but we also love the challenge of creating something unique for you.
