Definition of recruitment videos.

What makes a successful recruitment video?

A recruitment video is designed to attract new employees, whether they are entry-level candidates or skilled professionals. It focuses on conveying to potential applicants why they should choose this particular company by placing special emphasis on soft factors such as the work environment and work-life balance. These soft skills are conveyed convincingly by giving employees a voice and offering authentic insights into the workplace. The credibility and authenticity of the videos are therefore of the utmost importance.

Recruiting videos are also known as employer, career, or employee videos, and differ from traditional promotional videos aimed at end customers.

Recruiting videos are a powerful tool for reaching potential candidates and convincing them to apply. They offer authentic insights, appeal to emotions, save time in the selection process, and allow companies to target different audiences.

When creating recruitment videos, it is important to focus on authenticity, tailoring the content to the target audience, addressing relevant topics, simplicity, and professional production. A well-thought-out production process—from concept development to publication and promotion—helps maximize the benefits of a recruitment video.

GFA stands out not only for its traditional corporate achievements—which are considered standard today—but also for its goal of “finding solutions to the injustices of this world” on a global scale. Those who work here firmly believe that they can make a difference!

Over three days of filming in the winter of 2023, we captured a wide range of international employee testimonials at GFA’s headquarters in Hamburg. The biggest challenge in producing this recruitment film was gaining the trust of the participants in a very short time in order to elicit authentic and lively testimonials, thereby giving potential candidates a glimpse into the company. After all, filmmaking isn’t just about mastering technical know-how, planning precisely, and thinking creatively—it’s also about having a good sense of how to interact with people.

The 10 Key Benefits of Recruitment Videos.

A comprehensive overview.

Recruiting videos offer your company a wide range of benefits that not only increase the visibility of your job postings but also improve the quality of applicants. This has a positive impact on the entire application process. Recruiting videos are a smart investment for achieving your company’s HR strategy goals.

Here are 10 reasons why your company needs a recruitment video:

1. Providing information as quickly as possible.

A recruitment video makes it possible to provide applicants with all the essential information in a very short amount of time. In addition, applicants get a first impression of the company, its people, and their roles.

2. Convenient and entertaining for applicants.

Recruiting videos evoke emotions in viewers. This strengthens applicants' connection to the company—or, in fact, makes that connection possible in the first place.

3. Soft Factors

When choosing an employer, employees have long since stopped focusing solely on salary. Soft factors such as the work environment and work-life balance are becoming increasingly important and are best conveyed through real-life examples and testimonials in which employees speak from their own experience about work-life balance. Recruiting videos are the ideal tool for conveying these soft factors authentically and firsthand.

4. Internal and external impact.

A recruitment video not only makes a positive impression on potential applicants but also enhances your company’s image. It allows you to present your company exactly as you envision it. And the marketing impact of such videos should not be underestimated. Many people watch them, even if they aren’t planning to apply for a job right away. Internally, recruitment videos strengthen your existing employees’ loyalty to the company. It makes them proud to work for such a company, and they enjoy sharing the videos with friends and acquaintances.

5. Available anytime, anywhere

Another advantage is that recruiting videos are always accessible. Once they’ve been created and published online, they can be viewed on various platforms anytime, anywhere, without any additional effort on your part or cost to the viewer.

6. Efficient and Sustainable Recruitment

Recruiting videos allow potential applicants to learn about the company quickly and conveniently. This saves time and increases the efficiency of the selection process.

7. Job Postings

No one has time to read every job posting. That’s why companies need to stand out from the crowd. Major job boards already offer the option to combine job postings with videos, for example in the form of employer branding ads. These ads are highlighted in the search results. Suppose you have 30 job postings in front of you, and only one of them includes a video. Which ad would you watch first?

8. Type of Communication

Compare a press release to a LinkedIn post. In terms of language, they’re worlds apart. While press releases often use complex sentences and abstract terms, social media users expect direct, active, and concise communication. No fluff—just real people talking about the company and their work in their own words. Authentic, and—when desired and possible—tailored precisely to the target audience. They are therefore ideal for use on social media and help strengthen the company’s presence in the digital sphere.

9. Mobile Use

Internet usage is increasingly shifting to mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. This trend is also evident in job searches. Recruiting videos are ideal for mobile devices because they allow applicants to get a sense of the work environment through video. For more in-depth research, they can then use desktop computers.

10. Matching

Recruiting videos primarily improve the quality of applicants rather than simply increasing the quantity. A video can offer applicants a genuine, unfiltered glimpse into your work environment and help them determine whether your company, its philosophy, and the nature of the work are a good fit for them. This allows you to attract candidates who are a good fit for your company culture, and you save time and resources because candidates who aren’t a good fit for your company won’t even apply in the first place.

4 videos on various topics for MPC Capital.

The Keys to Successful Recruitment Videos.

An overview of 4 key characteristics.

Unlike reading a written job ad—whether in the newspaper or online—recruiting videos have the power to evoke emotions in the viewer.

Through editing, the use of stylistic elements, appropriate music, and other factors, emotions can be deliberately evoked. This allows potential new employees to get a feel for the company even before the interview and to assess whether they can identify with it. This saves time for both the applicant and the company.

1. Authenticity

A perfect recruitment video won't win over new applicants if it isn't authentic. Job seekers want a realistic look at the company, not scripted employee interviews that come across as commercials. It's not about creating a perfect video, but above all, an honest one.

2. Target Audience

As with many other types of content, the target audience plays a crucial role in recruiting videos as well. Before creating such a video, you should definitely define which primary target audience you want to reach. If the video is intended for use on social media, it will appeal to a different audience than an employer profile on major job boards. The tone and content of the videos must be tailored accordingly to ensure maximum success.

3. Topics

The purpose of a recruitment video is to showcase you as an employer. What is the work environment like, and how does your company address the increasingly important issue of work-life balance? Of course, topics such as career opportunities and opportunities for professional growth also play a role. Think carefully about what potential applicants would like to know about your company and what might motivate them to apply. And here’s another tip: Focus on the essentials.

4. Professionalism

When creating a comprehensive recruitment video in the style of a corporate image film—one that offers insights into employees’ day-to-day work or features interviews across various departments—professional production is essential, especially if the video serves as a flagship feature on your careers page. However, when it comes to short statements for social media, a smartphone can also be used. Nevertheless, it’s advisable to make these recordings as professional as possible. We’re happy to advise you on creating such clips and assist you with their production.

The production process for a recruitment video.

An overview of all the steps, from kickoff to release.

A recruitment video requires careful planning to maximize its impact in talent marketing and attract potential employees. The process typically takes one to three months from kickoff to release. Here are the steps we’ll take together with you to create your professional recruitment video:

1. Kickoff

At a kickoff meeting, we'll review your briefing and promptly send you a detailed rebriefing. This document summarizes all the information and points we consider relevant for your recruitment video.

2. Concept

Once we have identified the key messages together with you, we will develop a video concept tailored to your company.

3. Planning

Next, we’ll plan the production of the film. This includes finding suitable locations both inside and outside your company, casting appropriate employees (if they are to participate), scheduling shooting days, and assembling the film crew.

4. Filming

Once all the organizational tasks are complete, we’ll begin filming. Depending on the concept for the film, we’ll, for example, showcase workstations and the existing team, film interviews, and use our drone to capture impressive aerial shots. Filming usually takes 1 to 4 days.

5. Post-production

During post-production, the footage is reviewed and edited into your custom recruiting video. Animations, music, and a voice-over are also added at this stage. You can usually view a first draft of the video after one week.

6. Finalization

We'll review the first draft of the recruitment video with you and make adjustments until you're 100% satisfied.

7. Publication

Finally, the video is published on the desired platforms, whether on your careers page, on social media, or on job portals. Depending on your budget, paid advertising campaigns can also be used to increase reach. We’re happy to assist you with this step as well.

How much do recruitment videos cost?

Insight into the cost structure of films for your company.

The total cost of producing a recruitment video ranges from 5,000 euros to 15,000 euros, depending on the scope and specific requirements of the project. Companies have the flexibility to adjust the budget to align with their goals and needs, as there are a wide variety of options available in video production.

Concept development alone can account for about one-third of the total budget. This percentage is understandable, since carefully defining how your company is presented and how to reach the right candidates is of crucial importance.

The cost of producing a recruitment video can vary significantly and is influenced by a variety of factors. The following aspects are particularly important:

1. Concept Development

To get the most out of your company and your employer branding strategy, it is essential to develop a detailed concept. This involves deciding whether to use employee interviews, storytelling, or other approaches.

2. Filming

The choice of filming location and the film equipment used affect the costs. Whether filming takes place in a studio or on location, the use of multiple cameras, the use of a drone, or special lighting—all of these factors influence the budget.

3. Post-production

Post-production refers to the entire process of editing the footage. This includes cutting sequences, adding effects and animations, and adding sound and music.

4. Licenses

In some cases, licenses for music and voice actors are required, which can result in additional costs.

Young job seekers today expect video content on career websites. They don’t just want to read—they want to see who’s hiring, what makes the company unique, how it operates, and what they can expect as potential employees. This can be achieved, for example, through a testimonial video. A good example is this video we created for our client Ferrostaal Trading GmbH ( Jebsen & Jessen Industrial Services since September 2021 ). We edited together the responses from various interviewees across different departments to create a kaleidoscope of perspectives.
