The Process of Film Production.
From kickoff to release.
Learn more about the step-by-step process of film production, from the initial briefing to the finished film. Whether it’s a corporate, product, sales, recruitment, training, animated, or exhibition film.
Pre-production.
What does the film production process look like? We’re not just filmmakers—we’re your full-service film production company for audiovisual media. If you’d like to have a film made, we’ll handle the entire process for you, from start to finish, until the finished film is ready for you to download.
Following our initial kick-off meeting, we’ll summarize your ideas and project concepts in writing. This rebriefing, supplemented by your feedback, provides us with the foundation we need to move into the conceptualization phase and develop a project proposal.
The synopsis—which may already include initial mood boards—serves as the foundation for the next steps leading up to the final screenplay. Depending on the project, we supplement the screenplay with a storyboard, which gives both you and us a clearer idea of the final result and ensures that the film production runs smoothly.
But that’s just the beginning. Depending on the film concept, we need to select suitable locations, cast actors and extras, organize travel, finalize the set design, and determine the camera and lighting equipment. Of course, we’ll also put together the ideal team for your shoot.
The smallest possible camera crew consists of just one cameraman. In Hollywood, up to 300 different trades can be involved in a film shoot. For our projects, there are usually five to six people on set, including the director, cinematographer, camera assistant, sound engineer, gaffer, and makeup artist.
Once all the general conditions have been established, we’ll create a call sheet and a shooting schedule for the entire shoot, which will be sent to the entire crew and to you. This ensures that the video production runs smoothly. And then it’s time to say: Ready to shoot!
Production.
The process of film production during shooting.
The film production process is a dynamic one that always holds surprises. Not everything goes exactly according to plan, which is why careful preparation is crucial. A well-structured pre-production phase lays the groundwork for creative freedom and ensures that all elements work together seamlessly during filming.
Years of experience, an excellent network of freelancers, and the use of state-of-the-art technology ensure that video productions run smoothly. However, if something doesn’t go as planned, our many years of expertise allow us to quickly come up with a Plan B—or even a Plan C.
A key factor in the smooth running of a film production is that everyone involved arrives on set on time. This can be challenging, since we shoot under virtually all conditions and in a wide variety of locations. Often, a single car isn’t enough to transport the crew, equipment, props, and actors to the filming location. In such cases, the transportation schedule can quickly run to several pages.
But don’t worry: With 70 years of experience at PanFilm, there’s hardly anything we haven’t seen. The challenges that arise during filming contribute to the uniqueness of every production, since the process of making a film is always different.
After arriving on set, the day begins with a team meeting. Here, all team members are briefed and assigned their tasks. As soon as the lighting, sound, and camera are set up and the actors come out of makeup, we can finally get started. “Action!”—now filming begins until all the planned shots are in the can.
After the final take is wrapped, a wrap-up meeting with the team may take place. The data wrangler handles backing up all the data while the team begins breaking down the set. A productive day of filming is finally followed by the exciting phase of post-production.
Post-production.
All roads lead to Berlin. Regardless of how a film production unfolds, all the raw footage eventually ends up in our editing suite in Berlin. Once we’ve imported the footage into our editing software, we begin reviewing and evaluating it.
The amount of data generated by a film production can quickly reach terabytes, since between 24 and 1,000 frames—or more—are recorded per second. For security reasons, we create at least one backup of the data for every video production, which we store in two different locations.
Once we’ve familiarized ourselves with the material, we begin the rough cut. This typically involves precise editing of the footage as well as an initial layout with a preliminary music selection. Based on our experience, the rough cut takes between one and five days, depending on the project; however, for more complex productions, this process can take significantly longer.
After we’ve implemented all requested changes over the course of two or three rounds of review, we move on to finalizing the film—the so-called “Final Cut.” In this step, graphics and animations are created and inserted. Creating 3D animations, in particular, can be very time-consuming. This is followed by color grading, during which the colors of all scenes are harmonized to give the film its final look.
Finally, the film is mixed, and, if necessary, a voice-over is recorded with a professional voice actor. Now your film from PanFilm is ready for your audience!
